we heard loud tires screeching, following by a loud thud of metal-on-metal...what was likely to be a major car crash.
so we run to the window in my bedroom and look out with that kind of twisted nosiness you feel when you see accidents on the highway.
well this was no car vs car accident. a young girl and her bike were laying in the road, a few feet in front of a car that had likely been traveling around 35 mph.
you see, there is no stop sign for the cars that drive by. the girl had a stop sign but probably road off the sidewalk to cross the street thinking it was clear (it's a bit of a blind corner with the cars parked along the side of the road). it could have happened to any driver, even me.
she was probably in her mid-twenties. her shoes were laying about ten feet away from her. awful stuff. she wasn't moving at all, and the poor driver had yet to get out of his car, obviously in shock.
about 8 or so people came running out from nearby apartments, who had clearly heard the collision like us. she had a big bruise on her forehead (wear your helmets people!) and was barely talking. a man helping dug her phone out of her purse and made some calls on her behalf.
the man who hit her was holding her hand the whole time until a firetruck came within minutes. an ambulance a few minutes later. she never got up. just laid there until the put her on a stretcher and loaded her into the ambulance. the man who hit her was crying and the guy in the car that had been traveling behind him (and seen the whole thing) was giving him a hug.
then, a subaru came to a quick stop on the other side of the street and a man came running out. "that's my fiance in there! don't tell me how bad it is---just is she ok??" talk about heart-wrenching. brought a tear to my eye.

it was not what we expected or wanted to see. definitely not something you can shake off right away. phew.
hopefully she is ok and not paralyzed and the man who hit her is not suffering from too much guilt..there was nothing he could do.
it makes you realize how quickly and unexpectedly things can happen. so...wear a helmet, and watch for bikers. and appreciate the days you do have.

That's awful, and I certainly hope she's ok and that the driver is alright too!
